That 68% figure is the one that should worry you. Most stores we audit have a padlock in the browser bar and nothing else. The browser padlock confirms an encrypted connection. It does not tell a shopper their card is protected, that returns are covered, or that thousands of other people paid safely on this exact page. Those are three different jobs, and a single lock icon does none of them well.

Do security badges increase checkout conversion?

Yes, but not because a badge is magic. A trust badge works by closing a specific, nameable doubt at the exact second that doubt would otherwise stop someone from clicking pay. It doesn't create trust out of nothing. It confirms trust that your design, copy and reputation have already partly earned.

That distinction matters because it explains why badges sometimes fail. Placement carries more weight than badge selection. Here's the order of impact we see across audits, ranked from highest to lowest effect on completion:

  1. Beside the pay button. This is the highest-impact placement because it appears at the exact moment of decision. A small padlock icon with the words "Secure checkout" next to the submit button addresses the doubt right as it forms.
  2. Directly under or beside the card number field. Shoppers who hesitate while typing card details benefit from a reminder that the field is encrypted, ideally paired with a recognizable processor logo (Stripe, PayPal, Shopify Payments).
  3. On the order review screen, near the total. This is where sticker shock and security doubt often combine. A guarantee badge or return policy line here catches both objections at once.

Not all trust seals do the same job. Some address payment security, some address brand credibility, and some address purchase risk. Using the right type in the right spot matters more than collecting as many as possible.

Do trust badges work if your brand is unknown?

Not every store has a processor relationship or budget for a third-party security scan this week. There's still a floor you can hit without buying anything:

  • Make sure your checkout URL shows HTTPS and that there's no mixed-content warning, which the W3C's web security guidance treats as baseline, not optional.
  • Add plain-language reassurance copy next to the pay button: "Your payment info is encrypted and never stored on our servers" costs nothing and does real work.
